Dragons finish fourth

Hawaii Tribune-Herald

Honokaa got all its seniors, seven in all, against Seabury Hall in the HHSAA basketball tournament’s third-place game.

The Spartans emptied their bench, too, but shot better to beat the Dragons 52-43 at the Division II game Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The BIIF champion Dragons (12-5) wave goodbye to senior starters Kelvin Falk (seven points), Koa Callihan (five points), and Kainalu Lau (two points) and backups Kea Callihan (three points), Bong Pancho, Austyn Ah Choy, and Klayson Nobriga.

Honokaa’s returning starters are Kamuela Spencer Herring, who had a double-double (11 points, 14 rebounds) and Micah Lorenzo (two points).

Isaiah Payne scored 15 points and Peter Konohia added 14 points for the MIL champion Spartans (15-2), who shot 42 percent from the field.

The Dragons hit 30 percent from the floor, including 4 of 20 from 3-point range, and were outscored 33-23 over the second and third quarters.

In the first quarter, both teams struggled to find their shots. Seabury Hall led 5-4 after the first eight minutes.

It’s Honokaa’s second straight fourth-place finish at states but its first BIIF title since 2001.
